Farewell and an End to 2015



What a year it has been!

As 2015 comes to an end, we thought it was worth just reminding ourselves of some of the wonderful initiatives and events that have taken place as part of the TFIA’s ongoing industry offering.

These activities are all aimed at supporting industry capability, developing beneficial networks, promoting the depth and breadth available across TCF, and strengthening the role we play locally, nationally and globally.

Looking back it’s great to see such a diverse and useful range of activities taking place.

TFIA Projects and Initiatives:

  • Completion of the AusIndustry SCP Textile & Fashion Hub Project, & progression into Phase 2;
  • Completion of the ‘M-Tex Collaborative Network Project’ with Victorian Government;
  • Facilitation of the ‘META Textile & Australian Made Clothing Hubs’;
  • Delivery of the ‘Building Business Capability Energy and Resource Efficiency Project’ with Sustainability Victoria;
  • Delivery of key elements as part of the Austrade Asian Business Engagement Plan  – ‘Common Threads Hong Kong TCF Business Export Program’;
  • Ongoing facilitation of the TFIA ‘Performance Textile Network’.

  • Series of Export focused Workshops;
  • Webinars on “Textile & Fibres’ and ‘Government Funding Programmes’
  • ‘Supply Chain Smarts’ Seminar;
  • ‘Fashion Innovators’ Panel Discussion as part of 2015 Victorian Government Small Business Festival;

TFIA Advocacy activity, including meetings:

  • Presentation as part of APEC Workshop in Facilitating Global Apparel Value Chains in Vietnam;
  • Presentation as part of Austrade Indonesia Australia Business Week Briefing;
  • Hosted visits from government and business representatives from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, India, France, Indonesia and Belgium and Brazil;
  • Attendance at the Taiwan Innovative Textiles Application Show;

TFIA Government Submissions and Consultations:

  • Victorian Government’s Future Industries – ‘Food & Fibre Sector Strategy Discussion Paper’;
  • Australian Consumer Law – ‘Improvement & Amendments to Australia’s Country of Origin Labelling Framework’;
  • ACCC’s ‘Draft Regulation Impact Statement re Options to Limit Consumer Exposure to Hazardous Azo Dyes in Certain Clothing, Textiles and Leather Goods’;
  • ACCC’s ‘Consultation on Criteria for Accepting International Standards & Risk Assessments for Product Safety’;
  • ‘Imported Goods Labelling – Review of the Commerce (Imports) Regulations 1940’;
  • Submission and participation in Department of Education and Employment’s Committee Inquiry into ‘Inhibitors to Employment for Small Businesses and Disincentives to Working for Individuals’;
  • Liaison with Fair Work Ombudsmen re TCF Award Compliance & Education Campaign;
  • FTA Consultations – CHAFTA, TPP, India and RCEP;
  • Participation in TCF Training Package Review.

  • Ongoing Member Drive and inclusion of new Micro and Student Membership levels;

We are all really proud of what has been achieved this year and excited by the potential for 2016 and beyond.

It is also with some sadness that I let you know that I have decided to finish up as CEO of the TFIA.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision to make, as I have truly enjoyed my time with the organisation - as well as the experiences, people and projects it has brought me into contact with.  However, I feel that it is now the right time to start the next chapter in my career and to look at other opportunities and where these lead me.

I have learnt so much during my four years with the TFIA and am proud of what we have been able to achieve and the input we have had.

We have been working really hard over the past  months focusing on the TFIA’s role and remit moving forward, and with Dave Giles-Kaye - who I’m sure many of you already know, taking on the role of Executive Director when I leave, I feel assured that all the great work being done will continue.

Dave is already working on some TFIA activity and will start part-time in the role after the Christmas period.    I will finish up in the office COB on Tuesday 22nd December.

Once again I want to thank each and every one of you for your support, participation and contribution to the TFIA, and to me personally as well.

It has been a pleasure to work with you all and to be part of such a passionate and diverse industry.

I hope too that I will still get to connect and work with many of you in the future and look forward to keeping in touch.

Do keep supporting, participating in and linking with the TFIA too.  It is your Association – there to represent and assist you – but this can only be maximised if we all come together to share and connect.
