The International Sourcing Expo 2015 Highlights

The TFIA would like to give a big thank you to all involved over the 3 day International Sourcing Expo last month, November 16-18. It was an action packed three days with engaging seminar sessions, a high caliber of international and local exhibitors and visitors from various sectors across the TCF supply chain. Here is a quick recap of the Expo happenings in case you missed out!

Our very own CEO Kiri Delly kicked off the Seminars on the Monday morning, talking Industry Support for Australian Business. The session outlined available industry programmes as well as export and mentoring initiatives to help businesses succeed in a globally competitive market. The session also outlined what we are about here at the TFIA - which is supporting and advocating for the Australian TCF industries.

Our other Kirri (yes we are lucky enough to have two!), Kirri-Mae Sampson also took part in the Monday panel discussion, Hot Topics in Sourcing. Hosted by Mike Bellamy (Director, China Sourcing Information Center), Kirri-Mae was joined by TFIA member Elizabeth Formosa (Founder, Fashion Equipped) and Rajni Sharma (Merchandise Planner, David Jones and Founder, A&F Sourcing Solutions).

The expert panel talked topical issues including the increasing power and opportunity of eCommerce, ethical sourcing, quality management and risk, free trade agreements and the current state of IP protection. The topics and audience generated some great discussion!

Despite being an International expo, the event revealed some amazing talent and industry capabilities in Australia. We were fortunate enough to have a chat to several local manufacturers and suppliers. If you are looking to source for your own brand you should definitely check them out:

  • The Queensland Hosiery Mill who are manufacturing socks (and facilitate small runs) in QLD.
  • Leada Swimwear (QLD) who are manufacturing chlorine resistant school, club and training swimwear.
  • Rhino Clothing (QLD) a sublimation specialist and sportswear manufacturer.
  • H.M.A Fabrics (VIC) one of the few remaining Australian made and owned fabric suppliers!

Another point we took away from chatting to many emerging brands was the struggle of where to get started, whether it be sourcing, design and/or business and marketing.

We were able help through our TFIA Directory, a great starting point for sourcing various capabilities and materials across the Australian TCF supply chain.

Don't forget also about our valuable resource, The Textile & Fashion Hub which has free walking tours every 4pm on Thursday's for those of you wanting to get involved! The Hub acts to provide SME's with equipment and facilitate sampling and small runs in machine knitting, digital print and more.

We were also happy to be able to direct many of you to TFIA Members 'Fashion Equipped', who were also exhibiting at the expo. We heard they were very helpful - offering consulting sessions for starting and growing your fashion business. For those of you who didn't get a chance to see them you can visit the Fashion Equipped site here.

TFIA Member Julia, from Sample Room, also stopped by. Sample Room's unique offerings are perfectly suited to helping start-ups with sample making and small-run production.

We'd love to hear what you thought of this year's International Sourcing Expo!
