TFIA Member Spotlight | The Gently Unfurling Sneak
TFIA would like you to meet the colourful duo that make up 'The Gently Unfurling Sneak'. The label operates out of their Melbourne studio, creating unique clothing and homewares with a focus on print design.
The Gently Unfurling Sneak is a tiny little design company that likes injecting stories into whatever they make. Comprising just two people – designer Anika and production/admin assistant Josie – they create strange and wonderful illustrations and then apply them to womens and mens clothing, fine art prints, greeting cards and a smattering of homewares.
Anika's background in fine arts and collage comes through in the label's intricate prints, which are created using a combination of drawing and collage. The team then utilises digital printing or screen printing to transfer her artworks to fabric. Womenswear garments are generally loose fitting and flowy, with Anika exploring geometric shapes in pattern making such as this season's Square Dress. A dislike of some of the fashion industry's practices means that sizes go up to 16 and the business shuns the usual restrictive spring-summer and autumn-winter collection cycles. Anika and Josie prefer to focus on interesting, high quality garments that suit a wide range of people.
The team make whatever they can in their North Melbourne studio, and outsource whatever they can't to ethical makers. They believe in paying people properly for their work and creating safe and enjoyable work places. They enjoy playing with narrative and pattern and nominate silk crepe and organic cotton as their favourite fabrics to work with.
After a period of eradicating the beige paint and brown carpet of the previous tenants, The Gently Unfurling Sneak has recently opened its first bricks-and-mortar shop at the front of the studio. Just opening a few days a week, the shop provides a place where people can find the full range of products and allows them a peek into the studio as well. The shop is located at 629 Queensberry St, North Melbourne and is open Wednesday to Saturday.
