Get to know Thomas Puttick, director of the eponymous label and recent AFC member. The Sydney-based luxury designer is heavily inspired by classical art and remarkable women.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY BACKGROUND AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO FASHION?
I always gravitated towards fashion and my grandmother was a seamstress so from a young age I stated learning a lot with her. My career really started when I was hired into internship with Alexander McQueen and from there I spent a few years working at different luxury womens ready to wear labels before deciding to start my own.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT COLLECTION CONCEPT...
I think I’ll speak to the collection we have that is about to come out next month. It’s been a process of looking at some of my reoccurring influences in classical art (Rembrandt to Dubufe) and approaching the collection’s design very privately. I think that the final results are a more pure visualisation of my brand which focuses on masculine shapes and a classical sensibility.
WHAT DOES ‘AUSTRALIAN’ FASHION/STYLE/DESIGN MEAN TO YOU?
For me, it’s about embracing the fact that we’re so geographically removed. Growing up near the beaches and even with a brand within the luxury sphere, I see a sense of the Australian lifestyle to everything I do and I love that. I see that sense within the Australian designers I admire and I think that sets us apart within the global market.
WHAT IS NEXT?
We’re launching our next collection in late February as a see now buy now offering that will also relaunch our ecom presence and we’re also showing on schedule again in MBFWA’18 in May so those are two key moments that we’re excited for. Another is continuing our remarkable women series which highlights women of a range of backgrounds who we find really inspiring – that’s a really great project that we’re really enjoying.
