Cotton Tour 2018
Last week, the Australian Fashion Council attended Cotton Australia's annual tour to a cotton farm and research facility in Narrabri NSW. The AFC joined representatives from some of the biggest names in the fashion retail and textile industry, including Country Road Group, Jeanswest, Sportscraft, and RM Williams.
The tour began with visiting the Auscott cotton farm and gin at Narrabri to see first-hand how Australian cotton is grown and processed. This was followed by presentations from world-leading cotton scientists at the Australian Cotton Research Institute (ACRI), where topics on the future of the natural fibre and advances in sustainable practices were discussed.
Also joining the tour were a visiting delegation of cotton growers from Pakistan and India. The delegation was a result of a partnership between the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), with the intention of the growers learning from Australia's sustainable cotton growing practices and production.
The Australian cotton industry has achieved world class standards in sustainability over the last couple of decades, with reductions in insecticide use by 90% over the past 15 years and a water efficiency increase of more than 40% since 2003.
